おしぼりは日本のおもてなしの象徴

外国人はおしぼりに大感激!?

「日本の一番のおもてなしは何ですか？」と聞かれて何を思いうかべますか？
日本のキメ細やかなサービスは世界一で、それ自体日本が誇るおもてなしです。中でも”おしぼり”は、日本ならではの「おもてなしの精神」の象徴といえます。

おしぼりは夏は冷たく、冬は暖かいおてふき (hand towel)ですね。
このおしぼりのサービスは日本特有の文化で海外にはないって知ってましたか？
ですので、日本でおしぼりを渡されると戸惑う外国人もいるようですが、おしぼりで歓迎するというおもてなしの心が伝わるとかなり感激されます。

日本の飲食店で、トイレに行くたびにおしぼりを渡してくれるところもあり、新しいおしぼり目当てにトイレに行く外国人もいるほどです。「これぞ日本のおもてなし」を体感している気分に浸れるそうです。

おしぼりの歴史って？

さて、おしぼりの歴史は「古事記」にまでさかのぼると言われます。実際よく使われ始めたのは江戸時代の宿屋です。宿屋に入る前におしぼりで旅の汚れを取って、旅人の疲れを癒すのが目的だったようです。おしぼりでお客様を癒して歓迎するという精神が受け継がれ、おしぼりは現在、日本の様々な場所で使われています。

おしぼりを出するときは「ようこそ」と歓迎の気持ちを相手に伝えられ、迎えられる側も歓迎の気持ちを受け取って感謝することができます。おしぼりは日本独特の一種のコミュニケーションツール、そしておもてなしの精神の象徴ですね。

おしぼりのマナー

おしぼりを使う際にマナーがあります。外国人にも、このおしぼりのマナーをきちんと守って、日本のおもてなしを喜んでもらいたいです。

• おしぼりで顔や口など手以外の箇所は拭かない
• 台ふきんとして使用しない
• 使ったら汚れた箇所を中にしてきれいに畳んでおく

This is hot (cold) wet towel to clean your hands.
Once you get your”OSHIBORI” in your hands, you can wipe your hands with the towel.

歴史も交えて説明してみましょう。
OSHIBORI” is the towel that has been used at the time to welcome the guests at the inn(Hotel) in the Edo period.  When a customer came to the inn(Hotel),  the wet and squeezed towel was used to drop the dirt off before entering.  It becomes the origin of “OSHIBORI”. A warm and clean wet towel was a heartwarming gesture to customers.  Now “OSHIBORI” has been so popular in the modern era of Japan that it is now a basic standard hospitality in Japan.

おしぼりのマナーも教えてあげましょう。
“OSHIBORI” is used for hand wiping only.
It is inappropriate to use it on your face to wipe off your sweat or wipe table in a towel. 
After you use “OSHIBORI” for your hands before eating your dishes, fold  the “OSHIBORI” nicely because you might need to use it once again while or after eating.
